Thanksgiving Celebration Marks Launch of Safe Space for Tokelau Community

Last night, the Tūgaki Ke Olatia Champions of Change gathered at the historic Ferndale House in Mt Albert, Auckland, to celebrate the establishment of a special ‘safe space’ for their community.

Many in the Tokelau community face tough challenges due to displacement and the resulting intergenerational trauma. Creating a safe space for them to meet and talanoa is a response to that.

Thanks to a grant of $20,000 from The Cause Collective, the Tūgaki ke Olatia Champions have secured the use of Ferndale House as a gathering place from August 2023 to June 2024. Tokelau Change Agent, Lise Hope-Suveinakama, says it was an emotional time for their people.

“To have our own space to hear, share and listen to our stories and offer solutions was a great accomplishment for Tūgaki Ke Olati,” says Lise.  “We call Ferndale House our home for the work of Kāiga Māopoopo!”

Guided by the values of alofa (love) and fakaloalo (respect), leaders Reverend Iutana Pue and Lise invited everyone to talanoa (engage in open conversations) on pressing issues faced by the community.

With plenty of space to move around, the youth found a corner to sit and exchange ideas while the elders gravitated towards a different area to talanoa.

By establishing a space that felt safe and uplifting, the Champions aim to deepen understanding of the Kāiga Māopoopo wellbeing framework and inspire positive actions.

The dedicated safe space stands as a symbol of hope and empowerment and a stepping-stone towards a stronger, more united and resilient Tokelau community.
