Vuvale Doka Sautu is the Fijian cultural framework within the Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu Micro-Credential. It explores the cultural values, beliefs and family relationships that shape the lived experiences of Fijian families, helping practitioners respond in ways that are respectful, culturally informed and effective.
One of eight cultural frameworks that make up the Level 6 Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu Micro-Credential, Vuvale Doka Sautu recognises that while Pacific communities share many values, every culture has its own identity, language, customs and ways of building trust. Understanding these differences helps practitioners move beyond assumptions and build stronger relationships with the families they support.
Learning that challenges assumptions
Twenty-nine practitioners from across the health, education, justice and community sectors came together to explore how Fijian cultural values influence family relationships, decision-making and wellbeing. Participants represented organisations including NZ Corrections, Fonua Ola, Pathways, MIT Ōtara and K’aute Pasifika Trust.
Throughout the training, practitioners reflected on the importance of moving beyond a Pan-Pacific approach. While many had experience working alongside Pacific families, the framework highlighted the importance of understanding the unique cultural values, traditions and lived experiences of Fijian families.
One participant reflected:
“The framework was amazing. It was good to not assume all Pacific cultures do things the same way.”
The learning encouraged practitioners to consider how Fijian concepts of family, relationships and collective wellbeing influence the way families seek support, communicate and make decisions. These insights provided practical ways to build trust and strengthen engagement with the families they work alongside.
Another participant shared:
“The key tool and resource is you as a practitioner. How you respond and approach affects the person and family you’re supporting.”
The quote captures an important message from the day: while frameworks provide knowledge, it is the actions, attitudes and cultural responsiveness of practitioners that ultimately shape the experiences of the families they support.
Building culturally responsive practice
By combining cultural knowledge with practical application, Vuvale Doka Sautu helps practitioners respond in ways that are respectful, culturally informed and centred on the strengths of Fijian families.
As part of the Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu Micro-Credential, the framework contributes to a growing Pacific workforce that is better equipped to support safe, healthy and thriving families through culturally grounded practice.
